US Open – interesting facts, from 1881 until now
US Open is not the oldest tennis tournament in the world, but it is one of the most important. The first slam tennis match was played at Wimbledon in 1877, because if Europe is the old continent, she also had the first big tennis tournament.
The first edition of the US Open took place two centuries ago in the autumn of 1881, initially a sporting competition for men only, women entering the field in 1887. The Americans won the men’s tournament in 1881 until 1925, with one exception , in 1903 when won a British, Laurence Doherty.
Richard D. Sears won the first seven titles in the history of this tournament, then he did not play any finals.
In the feminine, from 1887 to 1914 they won only the Americans, with two exceptions, 1881 and 1882, when Mabel Cahill triumphed for two years in front of Ellen Roosevelt.
The first and only Romanian that has ever won the US Open for a single male is Ilie Nastase, who defeated Arthur Ashe. Since then we have not even approached the male trophy. In the women’s world, Simona Halep – World number 2 – played the semifinal in 2015, but lost to Fennie Pennetta.
But recently Horia Tecau picked up the US Open champion cup in the double match with his partner Juls Rojer, being the second biggest title for them after Wimbledon in 2015.
At the US Open, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe made history, and since 1990 Pete Sampres begun to win and stopped in 2002, after his fifth American title. He played three of five finals won with the rebel Andre Agassi.
Roger Federer (2004-2008) has also 5 winnings, and two other finals lost with Juan Martin del Porto (2009) and Novak Djokovici (2015).

In the feminine, it was a match between americans, again, two good friends, Sloane Stephens defeated Madison Keys in an hour, winning her first WTA title.
